Dialysis is a medical treatment that performs the function of the kidneys when they are no longer able to filter waste products and excess fluids from the blood effectively. It is commonly used for patients with kidney failure or severe kidney dysfunction. There are two main types of dialysis: hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. In hemodialysis, a machine filters the blood outside the body, removing toxins and excess fluids, while in peritoneal dialysis, the lining of the abdominal cavity (peritoneum) is used to filter the blood inside the body. Dialysis is not a cure for kidney failure but serves to maintain fluid and waste balance in the body. Patients undergoing dialysis typically require regular treatments, either several times a week for hemodialysis or continuously for peritoneal dialysis. While dialysis helps manage symptoms and prolong life, kidney transplantation remains the most definitive treatment for end-stage kidney failure.
